  4. Purpose of CERFnet
  5.  
  6. The purpose of the California Education and Research Federation is 
  7. to advance research and education in general by assisting in the 
  8. interchange of information among research and educational 
  9. institutions by means of high speed data communications and related 
  10. telecommunications techniques.

  14. CERFnet - ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY  
  15.  
  16. This statement represents a guide to the acceptable use of the CERFnet
  17. facilities. 
  18.  
  19. (1)    All use must be consistent with the purpose of CERFnet. 
  20.  
  21. (2)    The intent of the use policy is to make clear certain cases which are
  22. consistent with the purpose of CERFnet, not to exhaustively enumerate all such
  23. possible uses. 
  24.  
  25. (3)    The Chairperson of CERFnet and his designees, may at any time make
  26. determinations that particular uses are or are not consistent with the purpose
  27. of  CERFnet .  Such determinations will be reported in writing to the Board of
  28. CERFnet for consideration and possible revision at the next meeting of the
  29. board.

  31. (4)    If a use is consistent with the purpose of CERFnet, then activities
  32. necessary to that use will be considered consistent with the purpose of
  33. CERFnet.  For example, administrative communications which are part of the
  34. support infrastructure needed for research and instruction are acceptable.

  36. (5)    Use for scholarly and scientific research or instruction at
  37. institutions of research or instruction is acceptable. 
  38.  
  39. (6)    Use for a project which is part of or supports scholarly and scientific
  40. research or instruction activity for the benefit of an institution of research
  41. or instruction is acceptable, even if any or all parties to the use are located
  42. or employed elsewhere.  For example, communications directly between
  43. Subscribers engaged in support of a project for such an institution is
  44. acceptable. 
  45.  
  46. (7)    Use for scholarly and scientific research or instruction at for-profit
  47. institutions may or may not be consistent with the purpose of CERFnet, and will
  48. be reviewed by the Chairperson or his designees on a case-by-case basis.
